How do laptops benefit from new artificial intelligence technologies?
After two generations of Nvidia cards, in which the company supported artificial intelligence techniques, led by DLSS technology, everyone was sure that the American company was not promoting far-future ideas in order to market its cards. Actual experience proved the difference in performance between using DLSS technology on and off and showed that artificial intelligence has a large and influential role today in graphics processing.
These experiments, although they prove what artificial intelligence offers, have focused on graphic cards directed to personal computers.
What about laptops and what about the graphics cards you have? We know very well that the difference between copying the laptop and copying the PC is almost nil, as the performance results always show great convergence, but what about the performance of artificial intelligence and what about its technologies such as DLSS? Is there a difference in performance?
These questions and more are answered in our tests today of one of the Lenovo Legion 5 gaming laptops.
First of all, what is DLSS technology?
Before we start our test, let us explain the DLSS technology to you. DLSS is an acronym for Deep Learning Super Sampling, which in Arabic means Deep Learning Super Sampling. Certainly the translation is not enough to explain this technique so we will explain it better.
DLSS technology is a technology that increases the quality of graphics displayed on the screen by increasing the number of frames and improving graphics through artificial intelligence. The process is specifically done by processing the graphics for the frames at a resolution that is lower than the resolution specified to run the game and then improving the quality of those graphics using artificial intelligence to reflect this in the form of more frames for the user without sacrificing the resolution of the display.
There are many factors that control the effect of DLSS technology on graphics. Graphics card type and settings, in-game technology support by developers, in-game graphics settings and player-targeted display resolution.
We decided to go through with you the experience of the performance difference between activating and disabling the DLSS technology on laptops, to see if there is a clear difference or whether its effect appears only on personal account devices.
DLSS technology on laptops!
The laptop we are using is a Lenovo gaming laptop, and as we mentioned is the Lenovo Legion 5, which is available with the following settings:
- Intel i7-10750H Processor
- NVIDIA RTX 3050 Card
- 16 GB RAM.
- 512 GB SSD storage
- 15.6-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a refresh rate of 144Hz.
There are certainly other settings for this laptop with other cards from Nvidia, but we chose this version to test with you the effect of DLSS on gaming performance.
- Control game when DLSS is enabled: 72 frames per second. (medium settings)
- Control game when DLSS is off: 40 frames per second. (medium settings)
- CyberPunk 2077 with DLSS enabled: 45 frames per second. (medium settings)
- CyberPunk 2077 DLSS Off: 33 frames per second. (medium settings)
- Fortnite with DLSS enabled: 123 frames per second. (max settings)
- Fortnite when DLSS is off: 89 frames per second. (max settings)
- Call of Duty Warzone with DLSS enabled: 101 frames per second. (max settings)
- Call of Duty Warzone when DLSS is off: 81 frames per second. (max settings)
- Red Dead Redemption 2 with DLSS enabled: 81 frames per second. (medium settings)
- Red Dead Redemption 2 DLSS OFF: 72 frames per second. (medium settings)
The average difference in performance and as you can see is about 26% increase in the number of frames while keeping the graphical settings as they are. This difference is a good difference if we consider that it does not cost you any extra money, just relying on artificial intelligence and DLSS technology to get the best performance from Nvidia graphics cards.
What about the rest of the technologies?
If you are in the study stage, there is a good chance that you will need design software in the field of visual media. There are those who learn 3D designs, design videos, or design images on Photoshop as well. These programs will work much easier and faster with the NVIDIA Studio drivers that the company provides for its graphics cards, which makes rendering these clips in the end a matter of minutes.
All this happens using artificial intelligence that also makes it easier for you to install different effects that can exploit the internal hardware of these devices, or more precisely, the new generation graphics cards that NVIDIA provides you with.
Even if you want to show off your work in a video call with your colleagues or with your professors for example, NVIDIA Broadcast can provide you the perfect environment for this. You can show your work and broadcast it to them while you appear in front of them in a pure way, and you can even replace the background of your room with ease.
But it's not just the visual content industry, because other complex business areas can also exploit NVIDIA hardware. Here I will tell you about engineering work and various AI work as well. You can use NVIDIA cards to render complex engineering pieces that you design, or even develop AI business models for data processing and other similar work.
All this means that you will have enough time to do all the possible modifications or build these study projects from scratch, and this is because the time to produce the product itself is much less than usual for you with other laptops.
